Hey there,

I am a Swedish citizen living in Germany since January 2005 and working in Luxembourg since June 2005. I have NEVER been employed in Germany, never paid tax there and have therefore also never had Arbeitslosgeld.

I understand that if I would be unlucky to ever be without a job in Luxembourg (I have a 2 months notice) I have to go to Arbeitsamt in Germany (Trier in my case) and after the 2 month notice period) get Arbeitslosgeld from Germany. Is this right?

1. How much money do I get/month? I have never paid a Arbeitslosversicherung as I have never been unemployed in Germany before... 2. How long will I get this money? 3. Some people have mentioned a "grace period" where you will ALSO get some money from Luxembourg. Is this true? How much?

Have been in contact with Arbeitsamt in Trier but they seem clueless. Has this NEVER happened to anyone?? Hope for some info soon! THANKS!

As long as Germany as well as Luxembourg both are belonging to th EU, they apply the same principle: The country of residence pays; and the times of employment is recognized not withstanding where the employment has been. For your employment period you'll get a certification from Luxembourg's ADEM, that's for proof for the Agentur für Arbeit.

Don't expect payment from Luxembourg (as long as there is no social plan because of Kollektiventlassungen. You'll get attention so lang as you are eompoyed there, but much not thereafter.

In case of trouble aks your union, EURES or the EU, http://www.diegrenzgaenger.lu/index.php?p=edito&edito_id=1523

(Maybe they answer in Swedish!)

Thanks Meffo. Do you know anyone who I can contact and ask how much money I will get if unemployed (from Germany) and for how long?

I am used to 80 % of my previous salary for 365 days (so workdays 1 year and 6 months or so)

I don't know the exact figure, but I nearly got unemployed 3 years ago and the german "Arbeitslosengeld" that time was around 66% of the last wage (if married) or 60% unmarried but with a maximum of 1360 Euro for 12 months. After 12 months, you will get "Hartz IV" which means 346 Euro or so.....

You can play with that online calculator, http://www.pub.arbeitsamt.de/selbst.php

But the real problem is to know, how to convert Luxembourg numbers into german numbers, given that the German and Luxembourgish systems of social contribution widely differ.

There quite a lot of fictional calculations comes in. And I fear, some arbitrary decisions of administrators, keen to fill the gap in leagl regulations.

But after all, nowaday there really lies no sense in hoping for getting financial resources when unemployed. If you get unemployed - it's your own problem - that's the offical message!

See for more (in German) http://www.euroluxembourg.lu/arbeitslos.html

There is one point which should not be underestimated: 1. you have never worked in Germany and paid there for unemployment insurance into the states tills

All what Meffo and others say is absolutely correct, but be aware the German administrative system is heavy, slow and as a foreigner one could feel as not well looked after or treated badly, espcecially when it comes to money and clarification of situations which are not the normality or have not been treated by the particular person you might be dealing with in the administration.

It might be more interesting for you to register in Lux. Think about it, it is worth it.

Greetings and good luck
