Invitation to the next LIASIT scientific seminar to take place on 13th of June at 2 pm in the Luxembourg School of Finance (209, route d’Esch, L-1471 Luxembourg).

"Diversity in satellite broadcasting to mobile users" by Dipl-Ing Albert Heuberger from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

Abstract:

Digital satellite broadcasting systems can provide multimedia services to a large number of mobile and stationary users in a large coverage area. To ensure the best possible service availability in the mobile environment with the given limintations in transmission power from the satellite, diversity is employed in manyfold ways (space-diversity / time diversity). This presentation gives an overview on diversity options in general and will describe the application used in operational satellite broadcasting systems such as US-DARS and MBSAT of Japan. In more detail a new concept based on the combination of advanced FEC coding with long interleavers will be presented. The talk is concluded with some methods for the prediction of service quality in satellite broadcasting using more than one diversity path.
