Ok I am a bit confused so I hope someone can help me out. I live in Germany since January 2005 and work in Luxembourg since June 2005. So I want to buy a car and found one that I like but it's in Luxembourg. It's a used car from 2001 for 11,000 Euros and my bank in Germany will give me a loan for that amount. So the question is: what's the procedure from buying the car (from a cardealer) to having it in Germany? Do I have to go thru customs? Where do I register the car? TuV? Where do I get the licence plates and can I drive the car from the dealer in Luxembourg to Germany (I guess I have to take it to TUV??). Have never owned a car in Germany before....hope for some help:) Thanks!
Hi ph..., you may look for the suitable official information at the web site of the administration of Trier,
http://redaktion.trier.de/praefectus/trier
Rathaus / Ämter/Dienststellen / Kfz-Zulassungen/Amt für
On the other hand, you may prefer to transfer the risks and costs of declaring the car at the German authorities on to the trader.
Slimgirl, phone the vehicle registration office ('KfZ-Zulassungsstelle') +49 651 7183388 or send them an e-mail (kfz-zulassung@trier.de). They should be able to explain all details - especially as you're certainly not the first one to register a used car from LUX in Trier. Once you have to go there, try early in the morning (they open at 07:00 h - closed on Tue and Fri afternoons) - otherwise bring time & a book...
If you are buying from a dealer, you don't have to pay the "TVA" in Luxemburg, but in Germany. The dealer should give you a invoice withTVA "0". After Registration of the car you have 2 weeks to pay the German Mehrwertsteuer (16%) to the german tax office Finanzamt.
To register the car in Germany you have to have an official german adress and an insurance-certificate which you will get from any car insurance company. The insurance will be cheaper, if you have driving experience (without accident) - the more years without accident - the cheaper the insurance. As you never had a car-insurance in Germany you have to deal with them, where to start. There are big price-differences - you should compare several offers.
Good luck
Martin
It depends. Sometimes there is TVA on a used car - sometimes not - you have to check with the dealer. If there is TVA on it, the dealer should know about the procedure (see description above) - if there is not - you do not have to deal with the German authorities - in that point 😉
Greetings
Martin
